“He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”- (John 21:17)
It is common knowledge that it is the Lord Jesus who loves us and indeed all mankind. We are the ones who are always craving for His love and would hardly consider that the Lord Jesus needs us also loving Him. At least these scriptures reveal that about Him.
That pertinent question to Peter, “do you love me”, is also to us who are the followers of Christ or would decide to follow Him. Understand that the question is being directed to you too.
Just like Peter, we all have to contend with the challenge of what draws our heart and love after them. For Him, it was his old fishing interest that resurfaced above what the Lord Jesus wanted him to do. What about us? What do we love above the Lord and His wishes? We can list many things that will easily replace Jesus as our object of love at any time.
It’s time we became aware of the desire of our Lord for our own love for Him more than other things. Know that your love for Jesus is in obeying Him and it is as precious to Him as you see His for you. Pray for the grace to obey Him more.
